Small space secrets

Small-space living doesn't have to mean sacrificing style or comfort. It can be challenging, but with the right design strategies, you can turn even the tiniest apartment into a stylish and functional home.

Here are some of my favorite interior design hacks that will help you maximize every square meter:

1.Go vertical: Utilize the often-overlooked vertical space in your home. Install floating shelves, hanging planters, and tall bookcases to keep the floor uncluttered and draw the eye upwards, creating the illusion of a larger space.

2.Play with scale: A small space doesn’t mean having small furniture in it. Together with your needs and wishes you could decide to have just a few pieces to design your space but large. One large sofa for example can make a room feel bigger than several small pieces. Similarly, a large piece of art can make a small room feel grander and more sophisticated.

These larger pieces will add personality and style without the clutter of multiple small items.

3.Use reflective surface: Incorporate glass, mirrored, and metallic surfaces to bounce light around the room, making it feel more open and inviting.

Mirrors are truly magic in small spaces. They reflect light and make a room feel larger.

4.Multi-functional magic: Invest in furniture that serves multiple functions, with hidden storage compartments. Think sofa beds, coffee tables with storage, fold-out desks in the living area and ottomans, benches and bedframes with built-in storage to keep your home tidy and stylish. These pieces save space and add versatility to your home.

Also, when possible, try to choose furniture that can be easily moved and rearranged. Foldable chairs, nesting tables, and rolling carts provide flexibility and adaptability for changing needs.

5.Personal touches: Giving personality and character to the space is so important and will change how you experience it. Personalize your space with meaningful decor and accessories that reflect your passions and preferences. Select art, frames, pictures, or home accessories that resonate with you.

6.Zone your space: Dividing and creating distinct zones for different activities can be super helpful. Use rugs, furniture placement, and lighting to delineate areas for sleeping, working, and relaxing, even in a studio apartment. The space will appear larger but also will enhance its organization and tidiness.

7.Light and Bright: Light colours make a room feel more spacious. A cohesive color palette unifies the space and makes it feel larger, so stick to a few complementary colors. Add mirrors to reflect natural light and enhance the airy feel and where possible select light fabric for your window dressing.

Using multiple light sources, a mix of overhead lights, floor lamps, and table lamps will create depth and dimension to the room.
